After her first week leading a new project, Core Artist Jamie Fletcher reflects on what the team have been up to and where they’re going…
“Over the course of the next three years we will be creating and developing a big kick-ass, gender-euphoric trans musical. As part of this first R&D period I’ve assembled a writers room of amazing trans talent to collaborate with and begin creating the story. Krishna Istha, Tabby Lamb, Nemo Martin and Liv Wynter are all exceptional writers with a range of different experiences and approaches to making work, and it’s a delight to be collaborating with them. A writers room is more commonly seen in television production rather than in theatre so for us, this is a new way of working and there are some things that we are trying for the first time. It’s not just a testing ground for story ideas but also for the creative ways we can write and make theatre together.
I love collaboration, bringing different artists together to create something magical that didn’t exist before. It’s an amazing feeling. I love that unexpected things can happen when a mix of creative brains work together. That is certainly what has happened over the course of this initial R&D and writing period! You can see how the ideas from day one grew into those of day five, and yet somehow what we have ended up with at the end of the week could never have been imagined on day one. The ideas we shared needed time to develop and evolve, and the next phase will undoubtedly bring even more new and unexpected things to explore!
We might all be heading home for the weekend a little tired (with minds like mash potatoes!) but we are also buzzing with excitement about what we have begun creating. I’d love to tell you all more about our musical… but all in good time. For now what I can tell you is we have a lot of work ahead, but I think this new musical is going to be something really special.”
