Unlimited Opportunity

Unlimited Theatre are offering a young/early stage company of artists 12 months free office space (sharing with us at Yorkshire Dance) and bespoke mentoring in all aspects of company management. If you’re interested in this Unlimited Opportunity, read on…

Unlimited is a small company of artists and producers that in 2020 is financially stable, with an exciting programme planned through to 2023 and regularly funded as an Arts Council England National Portfolio Organisation. But it wasn’t always this way.

We met as a group of friends studying at the University of Leeds in the mid 1990’s. On graduating we wanted to keep working together, to be a theatre company like the groups of artists that we had seen and been inspired by at the (now long gone) Leeds Met Studio Theatre – Forced Entertainment, Fecund, Faulty Optic, the Blahs. It was 1995/96 so we could sign on and get housing benefit to support us as we began to make our way. The Workshop Theatre at theUniversity of Leeds offered us an “in residence” position with free rehearsal space in return for running occasional workshops with their students. Annie Lloyd at Leeds Met Studio gave us our first paid gig (we genuinely couldn’t believe this had happened at the time). The Theatre Company Blah Blah Blah and Forced Entertainment helped us with advice on company management and we shared very affordable office/studio space at Aire Street Workshops with a club promotion company and a visual artist.

We’ve never forgotten how much those acts of generosity, support and kindness  (including the unemployment and housing benefits that are so much more difficult to access now) at that earliest stage not only meant we could survive, but helped shape us into the collective of artists that we wanted to be.

In recent years, we’ve been supporting young or early stage artists and companies in Leeds and beyond. We’ve mentored RashDash, Made In China and the brilliant team at Transform led by Amy Letman. This has often led to us supporting those companies further e.g. creating shows together (Future Bodies with RashDash) or supporting projects with small but significant amounts of cash e.g. Transform19 to help secure a project that otherwise wouldn’t have happened. We’re currently mentoring a new Leeds company Fragments and have contributed financial support towards their first project creating an immersive experience for older people with dementia living in care homes. And we’d like to do more.

In 2019 we moved into new offices at the brilliant Yorkshire Dance where we have some spare desk and shelf space. And we’d like to offer this space and a programme of bespoke mentoring to a new or early stage company of artists based in Leeds.

You are:
• from or based in Leeds
• a company of at least 2 people working together
• no more than 4 years old (as a company)
• wanting to learn from more experienced arts professionals

We can offer:
• desk/office space for up to 6 people
• wifi/phone/electricity
• bespoke mentoring and support in whatever areas of company management you most need/want e.g. finance, producing, general management, artistic direction

We would set clear 12 month targets/goals (not as a test, just to make sure you’re getting everything you want and need from us) and review the arrangement at that time. Maybe that will be the end; maybe we’ll want to do more together. Let’s find out.

To let us know you’re interested, send us an email
• introducing your company and your work
and outline
• your plans and ambitions for the future
• why you’d like to share an office with us
• what you’d hope to get from the mentoring

We’re not expecting you to write a massive essay. Just say hello, tell us a little about yourselves and why you’re interested! We’re intending to meet with everyone who gets in touch and start the sharing arrangement by sometime soon after April 2020.

Please send your email to our General Manager Sarah Webb before ***EXTENDED DEADLINE**** midnight Friday 20 March 2020. If you have any questions, then please also email Sarah

We’re really looking forward to hearing from and meeting you.
