We are proud and excited to be hosting the Colin Pillinger Memorial Event on Millennium Square with our partners We The Curious – “An Afternoon on the Moon” – as well as performances of How To Save the Planet and conversations with climate scientists from the University of Bristol’s Cabot Institute.

Saturday 7th

12pm – How To Save the Planet

Inspired by the Apollo Moon Landings, UNSA’s Director of Human Spaceflight Jon Spooner is trying to work out what we can all do to save the planet. Join him and UNSA’s first astronaut Mini Jon as they shoot for the Moon.

2pm How I Hacked My Way Into Space

The hilarious and moving story of how UNSA’s Director of Human Spaceflight accidentally set up his own space agency and hacked his way into space.

Colin Pillinger Memorial Events: An Afternoon on the Moon

Bristol born and bred, Colin Pillinger led the Beagle mission to Mars and is widely loved as one of the UK’s most inspiring space scientists. For 2019 we are proud and humbled to host “An Afternoon on the Moon” in honour of Colin’s memory.

4pm – The Moon in Bristol and Beyond

Live from The Space Shed: in conversation with Tim Gregory, Bristol based Cosmochemist and the presenter of BBC Radio Bristol documentary ‘When the Moon Came to Bristol’, about the arrival of Apollo 11 samples in Bristol in 1969, and their subsequent analysis at the University of Bristol.

Followed by a conversation with space scientist Simeon Barber who having studied under Colin Pillinger at The Open University is now searching for water on the Moon in space missions with NASA, the European Space Agency and Russia

5pm – Moon, Art, Science, Culture

Live from The Space Shed: in conversation with Alexandra Loske and Robert Massey  on their new book all about the history and culture of The Moon. From its violent birth through to the exhilarating story of the space race and current exploration efforts, they discuss the many faces of the Moon and how they have shaped humanity’s existence.

Alix is a Lecturer in Global Ethics at the University of Bristol. Alix will be chatting to UNSA’s Director of Human Spaceflight Jon Spooner and answering your questions on climate change from a global justice perspective.
